How to Get an RCMP Criminal Record Check from Vietnam

If you previously lived, studied, or worked in Canada and are now living in Vietnam, you may be asked to provide a Canadian criminal record check for immigration, employment, professional licensing, or other administrative purposes. For fingerprint-based checks, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) uses fingerprints to verify an individual’s identity and conduct a criminal record check.

How can you get an RCMP check from Vietnam? You can have your fingerprints taken and have your application processed for an RCMP Check from Vietnam without having to return to Canada. This article explains how the process works and how long it may take.

What is an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

RCMP stands for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada’s national police service. In addition to its law-enforcement responsibilities, the RCMP manages national criminal record information used for criminal record checks.

When an individual needs a criminal record check in Canada, the RCMP checks their identifying information against records in the national criminal record system. Depending on the type of check required, the result may be issued as an RCMP Criminal Record Check or a Certified Criminal Record Check. These documents are also commonly referred to as an RCMP check or Canadian criminal record check.

The RCMP may require fingerprints that meet specific requirements to verify your identity for a criminal record check. Fingerprint-based identification helps accurately distinguish individuals and reduces the risk of confusion caused by similar names or personal information. This is why fingerprinting is an important step in many applications related to Canada.

Who may need an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

Not everyone needs an RCMP Criminal Record Check. However, if you have lived, studied, or worked in Canada for more than six months, the receiving authority or organization may ask you to provide one.

Common situations include:

  • Immigration or citizenship applications for Canada or another country
  • Work permit or study permit applications
  • Professional licensing
  • Additional documentation requested by a business, organization, or immigration authority

Requirements vary depending on the immigration program and the receiving authority or organization. Be sure to check the applicable requirements before preparing your application.

When are fingerprints required for an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

A common misconception is that every RCMP criminal record check requires fingerprints. This is not always the case.

Depending on the purpose of the check and the requirements of the receiving authority, you may be asked to complete either a name-based check or a fingerprint-based check

Fingerprints are commonly required when:

  • The application requires a Certified Criminal Record Check or a fingerprint-based RCMP Criminal Record Check
  • An immigration authority specifically requests a fingerprint-based criminal record check
  • Your personal information may match or be similar to another person’s information in the database
  • The application requires a higher level of identity verification
  • The receiving authority only accepts results based on fingerprint verification

Compared with a name-based search, fingerprints provide a more reliable method of confirming an individual’s identity. Fingerprint-based checks are therefore widely used for immigration, employment, professional licensing, and other applications in Canada.

What documents are required for an RCMP Criminal Record Check?

To help your RCMP Criminal Record Check application proceed smoothly, you should prepare the documents required by the receiving authority or the service provider assisting with your application.

Requirements may vary depending on your particular case, but you will generally need:

  • A valid passport or other valid identification
  • A fingerprint form that meets the applicable RCMP requirements
  • Information about the individual or organization that will receive the result, if applicable
  • Any additional forms or supporting documents required by the immigration program or receiving authority

For a fingerprint-based RCMP Criminal Record Check, the fingerprint card is an essential part of the application. Your fingerprints must be taken correctly using a form that meets RCMP requirements.

If you are outside Canada, make sure your fingerprints are taken by an experienced service provider and that all required information is completed correctly before the application is submitted.

Before submitting your application, carefully check your full name, date of birth, personal information, and the name and address of the organization or individual receiving the result. Even a small error can cause delays or require part of the process to be completed again.
